General Motors hired Kurt Kelty – the former Tesla head of battery development – as its new vice president for batteries.
The automaker announced that Kelty would be tasked to bring together GM’s resources to “more quickly deliver profitable, low-cost, high-performing electric vehicles to customers on a large scale.” He will report directly to GM President Mark Reuss.
GM Ultium Battery – Cell Stacking
Kelty’s most recent position was vice president at battery company Sila. He helped to push adoption of the silicon anode technology that will be used in the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQG EV SUV. Kelty had led the Tesla battery team for 11-years and was instrumental in the creation of Tesla’s Nevada “Gigafactory”. Panasonic, the company Kelty first worked with, also helped create the Gigafactory.
Kelty, in a recent statement, said that she has spent more than 30 year helping to develop and market battery technologies which will aid the transition to electric transport. “Joining GM provides an even greater opportunity to help the automotive industry make the switch, and have a lasting effect on our planet,” Kelty said in a statement.
GM’s Ultium-powered EV production ramp has been going very slowlyAccording to reports, this is due to a lack of batteries. This has caused GM’s production targets to be missed and likely pushed back the launch of more affordable EVs.

Last year, the company announced that it would be launching a new EV ramp. GM also bought the ALGOLiON is a new battery-health startup.Earlier this week, it confirmed plans to invest $19 billion in sourcing battery raw material from LG Chem until 2035.
The Chevy Equinox EV is not available yet. The price of the car is expected to start at $34,995.With an estimated range of 319 mile, it is the lowest-cost Ultium EV to date. The next-generation Bolt EVIt is expected that the battery pack will cost less. EV tax credits aside, neither model is able to compete with the value of internal combustion vehicles.
